As a story teller/film maker, the most important thing with any video is the story and the lack of equipment should never limit a story being told.
Having said that, I do feel it is important to stay up to date with gear and its functionality. I have my own personal gear for certain projects but due to my previous Industry production experience I also have access to professional equipment and I know how it all works.
